The Princes Highway is the main coastal route connecting Sydney and Melbourne. It is both a secondary north-south route through Wollongong, New South Wales, and a major linking road for the Wollongong suburbs.
According to the New South Wales Land and Property Information data, the Princes Highway enters Wollongong in the suburb of Helensburgh as State Route 60, running roughly parallel to the Southern Freeway for its length. It rejoins the primary southern route at the junction at Maddens Plains before descending Bulli Pass to Bulli, Woonona and Corrimal continuing as State Route 60. At Bellambi it loses its State Route designation, and proceeds through the Wollongong suburb of Fairy Meadow to the Memorial Drive Junction with Flinders Street in North Wollongong. It then resumes from the Crown Street and Mount Keira Road junction in West Wollongong again as State Route 60, proceeding via Figtree and Unanderra to merge with the Southern Freeway at Yallah becoming National Route 1. [1]
The gazetted route of the Princes Highway differs. It commences only from the southern end of Southern Freeway at Maddens Plains, with the road further north mentioned in the gazette as the Old Princes Highway. At Bellambi the route proceeds via Bellambi Lane and the Northern Distributor (Memorial Drive) to Flinders Street in North Wollongong, and through Wollongong following Flinders St, Keira Street and Crown Street before rejoining the Princes Highway named road through Figtree, Unanderra and Dapto to Yallah. [2] [3] The gazetted route is designated State Route 60 for its length, but deviates from the road that is signposted as the Princes Highway between Bellambi and North Wollongong.
