Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess of Oranje-Nassau (given names: Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria; born 7 December 2003), is the first child of Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange,^[1] the heir apparent to the throne of the Netherlands, and Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, his spouse.

Life

Princess Catharina-Amalia was born at 17:01 CET in the Bronovo Hospital in The Hague.^[1] After her birth was made public, 101 salute shots were fired at four places in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

On 12 June 2004^[2], she was baptised by Reverend Carel ter Linden in the Grote, or St. Jacob's, Church in The Hague. Her godparents are her paternal uncle, Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Marc ter Haar (a friend of her father's), Herman-Diederik Tjeenk Willink (Vice-president of the Council of State), Samantha van Welderen, Baroness Rengers-Deane (a friend of her mother's), and her maternal uncle, Martín Zorreguieta.

She lives with her parents and her younger sisters, Alexia and Ariane, at Villa Eikenhorst on the Royal estate, De Horsten, in Wassenaar, and attends the local school, Bloemcampschool.

On 19 June 2010, Princess Catharina-Amalia was a junior bridesmaid at the wedding of her godmother, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden^[3]

• Carmen is in honour of her maternal grandmother

All children of Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima will bear the style Royal Highness and titles Prince (Princess) of the Netherlands and Prince (Princess) of Orange-Nassau (Royal Decree 25 January 2002, nr. 41).

Following the tradition, Princess Catharina-Amalia is styled as "The Hereditary Princess of Orange"^{[citation needed]} (In Dutch: De Erfprinses van Oranje); she will become the first Princess of Orange in her own right when her father accedes to the throne.

Succession to the Thrones

She is second in the line of succession to the Dutch throne, and because the crown of the Netherlands devolves upon the eldest child regardless of sex, she will not be replaced in the line of succession by any future son of her father. So, providing her father and grandmother, the Queen, predecease her or abdicate and she does not marry without permission of Parliament, she will become Queen regnant of the Netherlands.

She is also 868th in the line of succession to the British throne, as she is a descendant of King George II through his granddaughter, Princess Augusta, who was also a sister of King George III (George III and Augusta's father predeceased George II). In accordance with the British Act of Settlement 1701, her father was removed from the line of succession to the British throne after he married a Roman Catholic.
