'Prinz Eugen der edle Ritter'

‘Prinz Eugen der edle Ritter’, first line of an Austrian patriotic song written after the capture and occupation of Belgrade in 1717 by Prince Eugene (see Eugen, Prinz). Its author is not known. The line is also used in a ballad by F. Freiligrath entitled ‘Prinz Eugen der edle Ritter’ (published in Gedichte, 1838); it has been set to music by Carl Loewe.
