Plot

A wacky teenage sex comedy of the sort that proliferated in the mid-1980s, this farce is notable for featuring two lead actors who would go on to bigger and better things. Rob Morrow and Johnny Depp star as Ben and Jack, respectively, teen buddies who are on the sexual prowl for beautiful, wealthy girls at a posh Miami resort where they are weekend guests. Also on the prowl is The Maestro (Hector Elizondo), a skilled jewel thief who evades detection by cross-dressing as a woman while he pursues the diamond necklace of society woman Amanda Rawlings (Dody Goodman). When they accidentally run afoul of the Maestro, Ben and Jack suddenly have their hands full. Private Resort was the third in a series of comic teen sex romps from producer R. Ben Efraim, each of which had the word Private in the title. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Review

In the high rankings of sex comedies, Private Resort not only has the undeniable luck of starring two future stars (namely, Johnny Depp and Rob Morrow), but it also strives for a kind of Blake Edwards slapstick appeal not often seen among the rest of its '80s cheap fare. To be sure, this isn't the highest caliber stuff, but its pratfalls, plenty of bare breasts, and joke-a-minute attitude make for one wacky ride that's both carefree and, at the same time, somewhat charming. Being an ensemble film, there's plenty of shtick to be passed around, with Hector Elizondo pulling in great comedic weight as the no-luck jewel thief, while future Police Academy veteran Leslie Easterbrook delivers some hilarious character work as his flighty, well-endowed Southern belle girlfriend Bobby Sue. Depp and Morrow are a joy to watch too, with their goofy, hormone-infested grins leading them from one sexy hijink to another. Rounding out the cast is Tony Azito (fresh from his incredible performance in The Pirates of Penzance film), whose rubber-band body is perfect for his character's endless physical comedy, along with a very hairy Andrew Dice Clay (here, billed as Andrew Clay) and the always amusing Dody Goodman as the ditzy, kung-fu kicking Grandma. If you're in the right mood, pop in Private Resort for some sexy '80s silliness that's sure to put some giggles in your diet. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi
