Review

This vinyl-only limited 12-inch compilation from the increasingly interesting V/Vm (Volume/Versus Mass) label is in a similar vein to the recent compiled efforts of Skam/Musik Aus Strom collaborative side-label Mask, collecting together a number of artists working in the lower-fidelity registers of electronica experimentalism. The most recognizable name here is Skam's own Jega (who share a track with Datathief), but excellent contributions also appear from Sherpa, Mild Man Jan, Frequency Band, and Objective. Ranging from dark, beatless drones to pummeling machine breaks and foreboding atmospheres, Reference is one of the best (and at 13 tracks one of the most concentrated) transmissions from the ever-fertile UK electronica underground. ~ Sean Cooper, Rovi
