The Antoinette Perry Awards (the Tonys) were established by the American Theatre Wing in 1947 for distinguished achievement in American theater produced on Broadway. The award is named after Antoinette Perry (1888-1946), chairman of the board and secretary of the American Theatre Wing. The categories have evolved greatly over time, and categories are opened only if the Nomination Board considers there to be sufficiently excellent nominees in a particular year; the following list of winners reflects such anomalies.
