a prolactin-related protein, the mRNA of which appears in several murine cell lines during growth. One of several proteins of the somatotropin/prolactin family that provide a growth stimulus to target cells in maternal and fetal tissues during the development of the embryo. The mRNA occurs in placenta, which secretes proliferin as a glycoprotein distinct from placental lactogen.
