One of the original (sedating) antihistamines, used to relieve the symptoms of such allergic conditions as hay fever and urticaria. It is also used as an antiemetic and as a hypnotic drug for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Promethazine is available as tablets or an elixir that can be bought from pharmacies without a prescription, and as a solution for injection on prescription only.
