The sense relating to sexual behaviour is now so dominant that we need to be reminded of an older meaning 'casual, random' in more general contexts that is found in Dickens and other literary contexts:
I walked in...just to say good mornin', and went, in a promiscuous manner, up-stairs, and into the back room—Pickwick Papers, 1837.
