A non-cardioselective beta blocker used for the treatment and prevention of heart arrhythmias and angina and for the treatment of hypertension. It is used after a heart attack to prevent worsening of the condition. It is also used for the prevention of migraine, the treatment of anxiety, and to relieve the acute symptoms of hyperthyroidism before surgery. It is available, on prescription only, as tablets, modified-release capsules, an oral solution, or a solution for injection.

Interactions with other drugs:

Anti-arrhythmic drugs the adverse effects of lidocaine are increased if it is taken with propranolol. See also beta blockers.
Bupivacaine: its adverse effects may be increased.
Chlorpromazine: the plasma concentrations of both drugs may be increased if they are taken together.
Rifampicin reduces the plasma concentration of propranolol.
