(geology) An arcuate ridge consisting of boulders and other coarse debris marking the downslope edge of an existing or melted snowbank.

A thin ridge composed of rock fragments, running along the foot of a mountain face. Protalus ramparts are about a metre high and many metres long, and are thought to be produced from rock fragments which have slid over a snow surface.
