Protected Mode driver

Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: Protected Mode driver

A PC driver written for 32-bit Intel chips. Although 32 bits became available with the 386 in 1985, it took many years for drivers and applications to take advantage of the migration from 16 bits. Windows 95 was the first version of Windows to include Protected Mode drivers for popular peripherals, but it also supported 16-bit drivers used under DOS and Windows 3.1.
