proto-geometric, name given to one of the five periods of the Greek era (based on the differences in pottery styles, denoting the early part of the Greek Iron Age, very roughly 1050–875 BC. (Compare GEOMETRIC, ORIENTALIZING, ARCHAIC, and CLASSICAL.)

A style of Greek pottery, derived from sub-Mycenaean forms, common towards the end of the second millennium bc, which itself develops by the 9th century bc into the full geometric style in which zig-zag and meander designs are characteristic.
