Providence Alaska Medical Center is located at 3200 Providence Drive in Anchorage, Alaska, is Alaska's largest hospital, has 341 beds and more than 500 physicians on staff. It is a full-service facility, featuring the state's most advanced medical equipment and treatment systems available. Some features include: The Children's Hospital at Providence, the only one of its kind in Alaska; a Maternity Center, featuring the state's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Heart and Cancer Centers; Alaska's largest Emergency Department with LifeGuard air ambulance transport; full diagnostic, rehabilitation and surgical services; and both inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse recovery services for adults and children. Other programs include a Family Practice Center, Sleep Disorders Center, Providence Imaging Center, Providence Home Health Care and telemedicine services for other Alaskan communities.
Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage is part of the Providence Health & Services in Alaska, which oversees several other Alaska medical centers and long-term care facilities. With more than 3,000 employees, Providence Health System is the second-largest private employer in Alaska.
As of 2010, a $150.3-million expansion project that affects NICU, Prenatal and Mother-Baby Units, surgery, pharmacy, sterile processing, and materials management is in its beginning stages. It is named the Generations project because of the Providence commitment to care for generations of Alaskans. A Certificate of Need has been applied for, and construction is expected to start in January, 2011. Construction and renovation is not expected to be complete until 2014.
With the increased need and demand for physician services in Alaska, especially for specialists, Providence Alaska Medical Center continues its construction on expanded medical office buildings and parking for the new facilities, started originally in 2005.
Providence Alaska Medical Center is also transitioning to an Electronic Health Record (EHR) that patients will eventually have access to from their homes, their doctor's office, or wherever it is needed. Implementation of the new system is expected to begin in 2011.
