Laos is divided into 16 provinces (Lao ແຂວງ, khoueng) and 1 municipality (ນະຄອນຫລວງ, kampheng nakhon). The special administrative zone (ເຂດພິເສດ, khetphiset) Xaisomboun was dissolved in 2006.
