Acronyms, like looks, can be deceiving. Take the case of PSA Airlines, whose name links to its past, short-lived operations in the Pacific Southwest. The regional carrier, now a US Airways Group subsidiary and part of the US Airways Express network, serves about 65 eastern locations such as Charlotte, North Carolina; Dayton, Ohio; and Knoxville, Tennessee. It connects smaller markets with US Airways hubs like Charlotte and Philadelphia. PSA maintains a fleet of about 50 Canadair regional jets (CRGs) made by Bombardier. Overall, the US Airways Express carriers, including fellow subsidiary Piedmont Airlines and several independent lines, operate about 330 aircraft, comprising turboprops as well as CRGs.

History

The airline was established in 1979 as Vee Neal Airlines (named after its owner vee Neal Frey) and began operating from Latrobe, Pennsylvania. On 1 May 1980 the operation was expanded to include scheduled air services between Latrobe and Pittsburgh with a Cessna 402. The airline was renamed to Jetstream International Airlines (JIA) in December, 1983 to reflect the fact that it had just taken delivery of two Jetstream aircraft. A year later the airline moved from Latrobe to Erie, Pennsylvania. On 26 September 1985 the airline affiliated itself with Piedmont Airlines and on 1 August 1986 JIA became a wholly owned subsidiary. Following the USAir acquisition of Piedmont in November 1987, JIA began operating as Allegheny Commuter from the USAir hub in Philadelphia. On 1 July 1988 JIA became a wholly owned subsidiary of USAir and began operating in the colors of US Air Express, later US Airways Express [2]. On November 1, 1995 USAir renamed the recently acquired JIA to PSA in order to protect the trademark of Pacific Southwest Airlines, which was once a large carrier on the West Coast that USAir had acquired. Since the acquisition by US Airways, PSA has transitioned from a fleet of turboprop aircraft to an all-jet fleet. [3]
