Colloquial term used by athletes and coaches, which refers to motivational strategies aimed at enhancing performance by raising arousal and increasing the activation level. Psyching-up often consists of a coach exhorting athletes to make greater efforts (see pep-talk). Sometimes the process results in heightened levels of anxiety and poorer performance (see inverted-U ypothesis).
