Review

Psycho Charger is a N.Y.C. trio (a foursome if one counts the drum machine) who offers up an interesting mix of styles, sounding like the Cramps playing Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet songs. The best sense of what they do can be gleaned by a mere scan of the track titles: "Roadkill," "Graverobbers From Outer Space," "Psychowoman," "Ghoulfriend," and more. While a few tracks dip into psychobilly, a spooky hot rod/surf rock combination is the order of the day here. Other sonic nods go to the Reverend Horton Heat, Nashville Pussy, and Man or Astroman? -- especially in the use of sampled movie dialogue. The use of the drum machine occasionally makes the music resemble Big Black playing surf tunes, to mixed results. While a few tracks congeal into an angry sludge, the majority of the album is a ghoulishly fine collection of spooky surf and rockabilly. ~ Jeremy Salmon, Rovi
