Publius Dğcius Mus

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

Dğcius Mus, Publius, one of the Roman consuls in 340 BC during the war with the Latins. According to legend he gained the victory for Rome by ‘devoting’ himself and the enemy to the gods below (see DEVOTIO), and then charging into the enemy ranks to his death. His son of the same name played a similar part in 295 BC at the battle of Sentīnum (Sentino) against the Samnites. The latter instance of devotio is more likely to be historical (see FABIUS MAXIMUS RULLIANUS).
