Pulmonary Angiography

Other names

Pulmonary arteriography.

Purpose
  • To detect abnormalities in the blood vessels of the lung.
  • To diagnose a pulmonary embolism.
Interpretation

The doctor examines the image obtained with this test, referred to as a pulmonary angiogram, and studies the blood vessels in the lungs for the presence of malformations, narrowing, bulging, or a blood clot.

The next step
  • The diagnosis or exclusion of pulmonary embolism by pulmonary angiography is definitive, and treatment is begun or continued.
  • The diagnosis of other pulmonary vascular abnormalities may require further interventions.
