History

In November 2000, Craig Media was awarded a licence by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a specialty service called Music 5 that would consist of five separate music video channels focused on a specific musical genre; dance, pop, urban, R&B and "hot hits".

Before the channels launched, Craig Media reached an agreement with MTV Networks, and in December 2001, launched only one of the five channels; the channel devoted to "Pop"[1] as MTV2. Shortly after the launch, MTV Networks acquired a minority interest in the channel. MTV2 was a free-form music video channel that aired music videos from various artists from different genres.

On December 1, 2004, Craig Media was sold to CHUM Limited, prompting MTV Networks to exercise its right to terminate the agreement with Craig if a change in control were to happen. CHUM was also required to pay remaining licence fees for MTV Canada and MTV2 of approximately $10 million to MTV Networks which also meant MTV Networks was no longer able to retain interest in the channels. Thus, CHUM later rebranded the channel PunchMuch on June 30, 2005, changing the format to a 24-hour interactive all-request music video channel. Ownership changed hands once again when on June 22, 2007 CTVglobemedia gained control of CHUM and its assets.

After a three-year absence with MTV2, CTVglobemedia's Razer was subsequently relaunched as MTV2 on August 1, 2008.
