Puzhuthivakkam (Tamil: புழுதிவாக்கம்), commonly known as Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam (Tamil: உள்ளகரம்-புழுதிவாக்கம்) is one of the southern suburbs of Chennai. It is now a part of Chennai district after the expansion of the city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It neighbours the suburbs of Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Velachery, Pallikaranai and Nanganallur. This suburb of Chennai started to grow in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Puzhuthivakkam had a population of 29,086. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Puzhuthivakkam has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 88%, and female literacy is 82%. In Puzhuthivakkam, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Puzhuthivakkam has a bus stand commonly referred to as "Mandaveli". Nowadays buses ply directly from this bus stand to Koyambedu, High Court, Chennai Central Railway Station, Guduvanchery, Sriperumbudur etc. A new bus named 5R from Saidapet to Velachery also passes by this area. More buses are expected to ply, as the road connecting to Velachery is now operational. Balaji nagar main road connects Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam.The construction of the extension NH45 with the name IRR(Inner Ring Road, Chennai) from OTA to Velachery is also putting this area under a fast developing areas of Chennai. Velachery - St.Thomas Mount MRTS Railway line construction is underway in Puzhuthivakkam.

Landmarks

Some of the important landmarks of Puzhuthivakkam/Ullagaram are Medavakkam main road, Kumaran Theatre, Drowpathi Amman Kovil and Oil mills bus stop.This development of this area has been slow ever since the 1970s, and most areas in this suburb often suffer from bad roads, water, sewage, garbage dumping, spoiling of the Pallikaranai marshlands and electricity problems, which are often neglected by the local politicians. The Puzhuthivakkam administration comes under Zone 14 (Perungudi) of the Chennai Corporation.

Some of the schools in this area are Vyasa Vidhyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, New Prince matriculation higher secondary school and Karpaga Vigneshwara School.
