pyrrhic dance (pyrrhichē), Spartan mimic war-dance, perhaps a form of the hyporchema. It is said to have originated with the Dorians in Crete. It was danced at the Spartan festival of the Gymnopaediae and also at the Athenian festival of the Panathenaea. The origin of the name is uncertain.
