Biography

The alternative metal band Quicksand emerged from the New York City hardcore scene of the late '80s; before coming together in 1990, singer/guitarist Walter Schreifels, guitarist Tom Capone, bassist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage all honed their chops in a series of local acts, including Youth of Today, the Gorilla Biscuits, and Bold and Beyond. A self-titled EP soon followed, and in 1992, Quicksand issued their Polygram debut, Slip, earning airplay with the single "Dine Alone." After touring in support of their sophomore effort, 1995's Manic Compression, the group disbanded, only to attempt an unfruitful reunion two years later before going their separate ways once more. Quicksand's former members have since cropped up in other outfits (Capone in Handsome, Schreifels in Rival Schools, etc.), and although they never broke out of cult status over the course of their two-album-long career, Quicksand's influence can still be felt, especially on such bands as Grade, Absolve, Thursday, and At the Drive-In, among others. ~ Jason Ankeny & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Quicksand were a post-hardcore band from New York City and, retrospectively, one of the most influential rock acts of that era. They were led by former Gorilla Biscuits guitarist and songwriter Walter Schreifels, and the creative blueprint that Quicksand provided can still be heard in current hard rock trends.[citation needed]

The band released two widely-acclaimed albums in Slip and Manic Compression before disbanding in 1995.[citation needed] In 1997, Quicksand reunited and embarked on a successful tour in 1998 with Deftones. Towards the end of the year, they entered Carriage House Studios in nearby Stamford, Connecticut to begin work on a follow-up to Manic Compression, but tensions within the band caused them to split up for good.

Pre-Quicksand

Frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, coming from a New York Hardcore background (having been the main creative force behind the Gorilla Biscuits, as well as playing bass in Youth of Today), recruited some of the scene's more prominent musicians to complete the Quicksand line-up: Tom Capone was the founder of Long Island's Beyond and had previously played in a later line-up of Bold, writing their more rock oriented "Looking Back" album. Alan Cage had been in Burn and Beyond, two experimental hardcore bands in their own right. Capone and Cage had played together in Beyond, a NY band who only released a demo and an LP via Combined Effort Records. Sergio Vega came from the short lived Collapse and a later version of Absolution.

Post-Quicksand

Since the band broke up, Walter Schreifels formed alt-rock band Rival Schools, who released one album before splitting. He currently plays in pop-rock band Walking Concert and does occasional acoustic solo performances. Guitarist Tom Capone formed Handsome with members of Murphy's Law, Iceburn and Helmet, releasing a self-titled album in 1997. He played guitar for Instruction for the majority of the time they were a band. Bassist Sergio Vega has since played bass on tour for Deftones, filling in for Chi Cheng in 1999 and 2009, and has also released solo material; he currently DJs around New York City. Drummer Alan Cage joined alt-rock band Seaweed and later Enemy after Quicksand's split. He has also recently been working with New Idea Society and 108.
