Quiñenco (which means "black lagoon" in a local Indian dialect) is a family business, albeit a massive one. The diversified company holds the financial services, food and beverage, telecom, and manufacturing investments of Chile's Luksic family, which controls more than 80% of the company. A separate Luksic family holding company, Antofagasta , has mining and railroad interests. Quiñenco owns more than half of Madeco, which makes copper, aluminum, and consumer packaging. Its 60%-controlled Compañía Cervecerías Unidas (CCU) makes beer, wine, soft drinks, and snacks. Other holdings include local phone service provider Telefónica de Sur (Telsur) and Banco de Chile .
