Quneitra Governorate (Arabic: مُحافظة القنيطرة‎) is one of the fourteen governorates (provinces) of Syria. It is situated in southern Syria, bordering Lebanon, Jordan and Israel. Its area varies, according to different sources, from 685 km² [1] to 1,710 km² [2]. The governorate has a population of 69,000 (2005 estimate) [1]. The capital is Quneitra. Much of the governorate was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War ( called the Ramadan War in Arab countries) and forms the contentious Golan Heights.
