(b Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, 25 Jan 1925). Cuban photographer. From 1946 he worked as a photojournalist for various newspapers. He accompanied Fidel Castro on a number of journeys and worked as a photographer on Castro's side during the revolution of 1956 to 1959, producing images of an almost monumental character, such as Cavalcade. His particular gift was for choosing unusual angles and for bringing out the humour in a situation through the relationship of one object to another. He took part in numerous exhibitions and international colloquia, and in 1964 became head of the Department of Photography and Microfilm at the Oficina de Asuntos Hist?ricos del Consejo del Estado. He produced several works on Cuba, such as Geografia de Cuba (Havana, 1959) and Cuba (Moscow, 1962).
