Biography

Having played a supporting role in both Slowdive and Mojave 3 (two bands led by singer/songwriter Neil Halstead), Rachel Goswell recorded solo material nearly a decade and a half into her career. Featuring assistance by co-songwriter Joe Light, producer David Naughton, and drummer Ashley Bates (a longtime friend, formerly of Chapterhouse), the full-length Waves Are Universal was released in June of 2004 by 4AD (also the home of Mojave 3). The Sleep Shelter EP preceded it. After those releases, Goswell continued to work on the fifth Mojave 3 album. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

History

The year 2004 saw Goswell release solo recordings with co-writer Joe Light and producer David Naughton. Nine months after Mojave 3 released Spoon and Rafter, she released The Sleep Shelter EP. Waves Are Universal, her first full-length recording, appeared a month later. Tiny Mix Tapes described the record as "delicate and well-thought out" despite occasionally veering towards "the frankly repulsive world of adult contemporary" while Pitchfork thought the album was "warm [and] summery ... agreeable, if not very exciting".[2][3] Stylus Magazine stated that Waves Are Universal is "a solid album that could appeal to both fans of [Goswell's] previous work and others".[4] In February 2005, a limited edition remix 12" (also available as a download) entitled "Coastline"/"Plucked" was issued and features two mixes apiece from The Earlies and Ulrich Schnauss.

Personal life

Goswell was married to Cuba's Christopher Andrews from 1994 until 2000.

While on tour with Slowdive in 1993, one of her eardrums burst, and it has troubled her ever since, in the form of persistent infections, partial deafness (which she employs a hearing aid to correct) and ataxia. This has prevented her from performing on occasion, and she was absent from the last Mojave 3 album, 2006's Puzzles Like You.
