(biology) The harmful effects of ionizing radiation on humans and other animals, such as production of cancers, cataracts, and radiation ulcers, loss of hair, reddening of skin, sterilization, nausea, vomiting, mucous or bloody diarrhea, purpura, epilation, and agranulocytic infections.
