Biography

With his sensuous vocals, Ragheb Alama (born: Ragheb Subhi Alama) has risen to the upper echelon of Middle Eastern pop music. The recipient of an Arabian World Gold Lion award as Best Arabic Singer of 1998, Alama continues to bring a modern sensibility to the traditional music of his homeland. Alama's talents as a singer were apparent from an early age. His father was so impressed with his singing that he arranged for him to be interviewed on Lebanese radio before his tenth birthday. Enrolling at the Beirut Conservatory of Music, at the age of 15, Alama spent several years studying the lute. His skill at singing traditional folk songs resulted in his receiving a gold medal. Launching his professional career in 1982, Alama has become a regular performer at music festivals in Lebanon and Egypt. Ragheb Subhi Alama (Arabic: راغب صبحي علامة‎ born June 7, 1962) is a Lebanese singer and composer. Born and raised in Ghoubeiri in Beirut, Lebanon, Alama has a career spanning over 25 years. He was awarded the Murex Dor award as the best Arab singer and he won the platinum CD award as the Best Selling Middle Eastern Artist two times: 1992 and 2009.

He married Jehan Al Ali in January 18 1996, and has two children, Khaled (Born 1997) and Louay (Born 2001). He has 3 sisters and 4 brothers-of which he was the youngest. His father named him after the first Lebanese judge, "Ragheb beik Alama".

Biography

Ragheb distinguished in singing in his early age and his courage. Ragheb took up playing the Oud and participated in a live radio program when he was 8 years old.

Ragheb Alama was a star among his school friends. He used to participate in school activities to sing on stage.

At that time, his biggest achievement was participating in the most important program on TV for talents called Studio El Fan. He achieved the Platinum Award in that program.

His first song was "Bokra Beyobrom Dolabik". Afterwards, he started to show on TV and his name started to rise gradually.

His rise to fame started in 1982. He was the star of several festivals, both Arab and International, such as at Carthage, Jerash and the City Lights Festival in Egypt. His awards include the Key of Detroit, that of the City of Sydney, a platinum disc for his album Albi A'she'aha and Egypt's Oscar for Video Clip "Alamtini", Best Arabic Male Singer in the Arabian World Gold Lion in 1998.

He has released around 15 albums since the early 1980s. His first successful album which remarked the debut of his career internationally was "Albi A'she'aha", which was also the first professionally shot video clip in the Arab World. Since then, Ragheb's albums achieve the top ranking in sales such as Ya Hayaty, Bravo Aliki, Farq Kbeer, Habiby ya Nasi, Tab Leih,El Hob El Kbeer and "Ba'sha'ak". In addition, Ragheb's concerts were the most wanted and the most turnout among all.

2000-Present

In 2000, Alama recorded "Betgheeb betrouh" with the then-rising singer Elissa. In 2003, Alama released Tab Leh? (Oh Why?) under the recording label Alam El Phan and the title track, entered the No.1 spot. He co-performed "Yallah Ya Shabab" with Andy Madadian.

At the end of 2004 he released Al Hob el-Kabir (The Great Love). The first single was "Nasseny Eldonia" (make me forget the world), video for which was shot in Italy. In July 2005, the title track premiered on Melody Hit. The music video, directed by Wissam Smayra, was shot in Malaysia.

International companies such as, Samsung, Persol, Mercedes Benz, Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, and Lou Loua Project in Qatar signed contacts with Ragheb Alama for their marketing campaigns.

In 2006, he participated in the pro-celebrity Formula One race, held in Bahrain, as an introductory show to the competition. He won Third Place overall. The Formula One Management started an agreement with Alama to participate in the next race that will be held in Shanghai, China.

In May 2008, Ragheb Alama has released Ba'sha'akand in April, 2009 and for the first time in the Arab world, Ragheb Alama achieved the platinum award from Virgin Megastore in Dubai for the highest sales of albums among others. The album named "Ba'sha'ak" produced by his own company BackStage Productions.
