Review

As much as Side Effect had going for it, the group's history was rather frustrating. It was frustrating that Side Effect didn't have more hits, and it was frustrating that most of its albums weren't as strong as they could have been. The only Side Effect album that was truly excellent was What You Need -- for the most part, the Angelinos delivered albums that were decent but not great. A perfect example is Side Effect's fourth album, Rainbow Visions which Augie Johnson co-produced with Wayne Henderson. This was Sylvia St. James' second, and last, project with the group, and it marked the first time a female vocalist had stayed with Side Effect for more than one album. Rainbow Visions is far from bad -- funky offerings like "Peace of Mind" and "Illee Illee Oh I Know" are likable enough. But the only time that Side Effect really soars on this LP is when it delivers the confident, assured "I'm a Winner" and the dreamy, Whispers-like title song. For the most part, Rainbow Visions is an example of a group simply being competent when it had the potential to be outstanding. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
