| “ | My first acting experience was on the stage. My mother had a drama troupe and used to rent out drama sets. My father wanted me to study, but my mother wanted me to act. I was introduced to R.S. Manohar, who gave me a chance to act in plays such as `Chanakya Sabadam', `Kaadagamudreyan', `Ilangeswaran' and `Anbin Ellai', which was the only social drama he staged. I was in his drama troupe for nearly 10 years.
When I finished my PUC, I started my own drama troupe, Sankaralaya. I decided to try my luck in films and joined Karaikudi Narayanan as his assistant. While working with director Vikraman, I got a chance to act in one or two scenes. After a great struggle, I directed `Thodarum', which starred actors Ajith and Devayani.Vikraman gave me a role in the film `Unidathil Ennai Koduthein'. He asked me to act with Karthik. I was shocked to see my image as big as the hero (Karthik) on the posters. The film was released in August 1998 and my debut directorial venture Thodarum was released in January 1999. Rajnikant, who saw the film, called me to act with him in Padaiyappa. It was a great moment for me as I also worked as a co-director to K. S. Ravikumar for the same film. Recognition followed. Now I’m known the world over more as an actor than a director — as I’ve directed only one film so far. |
