| Ramesses in hieroglyphs |
|---|
Ramesses (/ˈræməsiːz/; also commonly spelled Rameses or Ramses
/ˈræmsiːz/) is the name conventionally given in English transliteration to 11 Egyptian pharaohs of the later New Kingdom period. The name essentially translates as "Born of the sun-god Ra".
A variant of the name is Ramose; Egyptologists usually use the Ramesses variant for pharaohs and Ramose for non-royals.
