A countersunk ramrod, used in the 19th century for cylindro-conical bullet, as in the Thouvenin stem rifle or the Minié rifle

A ramrod is a device used with early firearms to push the projectile up against the propellant (mainly gunpowder). The ramrod was used with muskets, including the flintlock and caplock. The ramrod could also be fitted with tools for various tasks such as cleaning the weapon, or retrieving a stuck bullet. The ramrod was held in a long notch underneath the musket.
