temperature. Symbols deg R, degree R, °R. A scale and a unit of temperature, being the ‘absolute’ scale relating to Fahrenheit, i.e. having its zero at the thermodynamic null and its degree such that there are 180 between the freezing point and the boiling point of water. Thus the degree Rankine equals the degree Fahrenheit and 0°R = -459.67~ °F. Readings on the scale are expressed usually as °R, temperature intervals preferably as deg R or degree R, sometimes . (Note use of R also for Réaumur scale.)
