Ratio of periodic income or change to the amount invested or initial amount.


Example: A lender charges a rate of interest (interest due ÷ loan amount). An investor expects to earn a rate of return (investment income ÷ amount invested). The population changes at the rate of growth (population gain ÷ previous population). A building may have an occupancy rate (units occupied ÷ total units).
