A form of local taxation raised in Britain on all property, domestic or industrial, based on the rateable value of the property. The rateable value was assessed by the local authority—rates varied nationally—and a tax had to be paid in relation to that value. The system of domestic rates was superseded by the community charge or poll tax, which was, in turn, replaced by the council tax.
