Biography

Ray Dorset had his moment in the spotlight when his band, Mungo Jerry, recorded one of the biggest selling hits of 1970. A skiffle-style blues, "In The Summertime", sold more than thirty million copies worldwide and became a classic of the summer season. It topped the charts a second time when a version by Shaggy was featured in the film, Flipper. The song has also been recorded by Elton John and Bob Dylan. Dorset received two Ivor Novello awards as songwriter.

Dorset was already a veteran performer when he formed Mungo Jerry in 1969. His first band, the Blue Moon Skiffle Group, featuring Phil Collins on drums, was formed when he was eleven years old. Three years later, he briefly joined Jackie Edwards's group. In the early-1960s, his band, the Concords shared a weekly gig at the Station Tavern in Richmond with the Rolling Stones.

Forming a new band, Good Earth, with keyboardist Colin Earle, guitar, kazoo and jug player Paul King, upright bassist Mike Cole and washboard Joe Rush, Dorset signed with independent label, Saga. When executives of the label discovered that the band was taking a jug band-influenced approach, their contract was dropped.

Moving to Dawn Records, and changing their name to Mungo Jerry. Dorset and the band were an immediate success. Their debut performance, at a festival in Hollywood, a small village near Newcastle-Under-Lyme, put them on the same bill as such top acts as the Grateful Dead, Jose Feliciano, Ginger Baker's Air Force and Black Sabbath. Their good-humored music, however, captured the headlines.

Released in June 1970, "In The Summertime", was an overnight hit. Reaching the thirteenth chart position, three days after being released, it climbed to the top of British pop charts, a week later, and went on to sell more than six million copies in England alone. It remained in the top fifty for twenty weeks, including seven weeks at number one.

The song's success represented Dorset and Mungo Jerry's peak. Although they subsequently reached the top of the British charts with "Baby Jump" and "Lady Rose", they were unable to maintain the momentum internationally. By 1972, Mungo Jerry was reduced to Dorset and a lengthy list of supporting musicians including ex-Chicken Shack drummer Paul Hancox and future Ozzie Osbourne bassist Bob Daisley.

One of the first white musicians in England to incorporate disco, Dorset penned a chart-topping UK disco hit, "Feel Like I'm In love", for Kelly Marie, in 1980. A solo album, Cold Blue Excursion, released in 1972, was followed by A Case For The Blues, featuring ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green, in 1987.

A definitive biography of Dorset and Mungo Jerry, Beyond The Summertime, by John Van Der Kiste and Derek Wadeson, was published by A&F Publications in 2002. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Ray Dorset (born Raymond Edward Dorset, 21 March 1946, Ashford, Kent) is a English guitarist, singer, songwriter and founder of Mungo Jerry. He composed most of the songs for the band, including the hit singles "In the Summertime", "Mighty Man", "Baby Jump", "Lady Rose", "You Don't Have To Be in the Army to Fight in the War", "Alright Alright Alright", "Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black" and "Hello Nadine".

In 1968 he formed the group Good Earth, which also included Colin Earl on keyboards, Dave Hutchins on bass, and Ray Bowerman on drums. They recorded the album It's Hard Rock And All That on the Saga record label, before Hutchins and Bowerman left. Joe Rush joined on washboard and the group adopted a more acoustic-based skiffle style. In 1970 with further line-up changes the group became Mungo Jerry with hits to follow such as "In the Summertime".

Dorset has also maintained a solo career parallel to his leadership of Mungo Jerry. In 1972 he released an album Cold Blue Excursion, made up entirely of self-penned songs, many featuring strings and brass accompaniment; in 1983 he was part of one-off blues outfit Katmandu with Peter Green and Vincent Crane, who recorded an album A Case For The Blues; and in 1986, billed as 'Made in England', he recorded and released the theme tune for the TV drama series Prospects as a single.

One song recorded by Mungo Jerry, "Feels Like I'm in Love", was originally written by Dorset for Elvis Presley, but he died before the recording of the song. Nevertheless, in 1979 it was recorded by disco singer Kelly Marie, and became a UK Number one in September 1980.[1] It thus made Dorset one of the first songwriters to top the UK Singles Chart with singles performed by himself, and by another artiste.[1]

In addition to guitar he has played several other instruments on stage and record, including harmonica, kazoo, accordion and keyboards.

Dorset currently resides in Bournemouth, England and Bielefeld, Germany, where he lives with his wife and two young sons. One of his two elder sons - who are living in the United Kingdom - Russell Dorset, is a director of sales and marketing at a multi-channel retail specialist. James Dorset is organising concerts and marketing for his father and Mungo Jerry.
