Moore, Raymond (1920-81), the second British photographer—after Bill Brandt—accorded a solo show at London's Hayward Gallery (1981). While Brandt's photography seemed the equivalent of a concert grand, Moore's resembled a clavichord. Once the viewer is attuned to them, Moore's unobtrusive, exacting, graphic skills become addictive. His subject was Britain's grey light, its deserted parks, out of season resorts, dilapidated coastlines, and lonely B roads—and the way they can unexpectedly light up with epiphany or darken with melancholy. His work continues to attract new admirers.
