Raymund Gayrard of Toulouse

Raymund Gayrard of Toulouse, canon of St. Sernin, (c.1050–1118). Born in Toulouse, he became a chorister and schoolmaster in the splendid Romanesque brick church of St. Sernin. He married a wife, who died soon after the wedding. He then decided to devote his life to charitable actions. He cared for the poor and the needy in the city, including Jews. He founded an almshouse for thirteen people and built two stone bridges. Eventually he became a priest, then a canon, and eventually provost at St. Sernin, where he completed the building and enriched the spectacular relic-collection which still survives. He died on 3 July and was buried in the almshouse. Around his tomb his cult developed, with a large number of miraculous cures claimed there. The cult was approved in 1652. Feast: 3 July.
