Razor & Tie is a New York based corporation founded in 1990 by Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam. The company encompasses a record label with major label distribution, a home video company, a media buying company, a music publishing business, a marketing, promotion and sales team, and a direct marketing operation.[1]
Early in their existence, the label concentrated on "greatest hits" compilations by otherwise unanthologized artists (Ivory Joe Hunter, Jules Shear, et al.). Razor & Tie now represents musicians producing music in Folk, Dance, Metal, Pop, Rock, Soul and World genres. Current Razor & Tie artists include Kidz Bop Kids, Angelique Kidjo, Dar Williams, Devin the Dude, Joan Baez, All That Remains, Dave Barnes, EndeverafteR, Kelly Sweet, Semi Precious Weapons, Ryan Shaw, Tina Sugandh, Simon Collins, Dead Confederate, Day of Fire, Just Surrender,Unarmed For Victory and Norma Jean.
Razor & Tie is perhaps best known for its Kidz Bop compilations, which take the latest pop hits and rework them as sung by children.[2] Other products include albums by Corey Smith, The Clarks, Danko Jones, 40 Below Summer, Brand New, Donnie Iris, Steve Hofstetter, Seven Nations, Sonia Dada, John Lithgow, and Twisted Sister, Laurie Berkner, and videos such as the Sweating in the Spirit workout series and various DVD reincarnations of the For Dummies series.
In 2007, the company released the soundtrack for the film Alvin and the Chipmunks.
The soundtrack to the Warner Premiere direct-to-DVD family film Another Cinderella Story was released in 2008. Other recent releases include the soundtrack to the direct-to-DVD film The Clique, I'll Be Home For Christmas by Brian McKnight, The Miracle of Christmas by Neil Sedaka, and Undeniable by Alvin and the Chipmunks.
