The brand was established in South Wales by John Myers, based on the Century Radio brand that he set up for Border Television. GMG later purchased the remaining Century stations (North East and North West), re branding them into Real in 2009.
Real Radio has news on every hour, 24 hours a day, provided by Real Radio journalists. In addition English and Welsh stations also take Sky News Radio after midnight, while Scottish station take a live bulletins provided by Real Radio journalists.
In addition to the above listed stations, Real Radio also operated a digital-only station, Real Radio (Digital), which broadcast on DAB in several areas where Real did not broadcast on analogue, and also broadcast on Sky Digital. In 2008, Real Digital closed, replaced by the new Jazz FM (UK) in several locations (it was replaced by Rock Radio in the North East and by a relay of Real Radio Wales on Sky).
