Biography

Actress/singer Rebecca Pidgeon was born in Cambridge, MA, but raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, going on to study at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1986 she sang on a demo recording cut by her guitarist friend Roger Fife that attracted the attention of the tiny independent label Red Flame, which immediately signed the duo to release the folk-pop effort Glances Askances; Pidgeon later fronted the group Ruby Blue, which in 1989 issued the LP Down from Above. Around that same time she made her feature film debut in The Dawning; she also co-starred in the London premiere of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, later becoming the acclaimed playwright's wife. Following her husband back to the U.S., Pidgeon subsequently starred in the world premiere of Mamet's Oleanna, and in 1991 appeared in his film Homicide; in 1994, she also made her solo LP debut with The Raven. The New York Girls' Club followed a year later, and in 1998 Pidgeon returned with Four Marys. Since that time, she released the 2003 compilation album Retrospective and the studio effort Tough on Crime in 2005. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Biography

Though she also has a successful recording career as a jazz/folk singer/songwriter, actress Rebecca Pidgeon is perhaps more familiar for her work with her husband, hard-edged playwright/filmmaker David Mamet. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Scotland, Pidgeon studied acting at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Along with performing on stage in Great Britain, Pidgeon made her film debut acting with Trevor Howard, Anthony Hopkins, and Hugh Grant in the 1920s-set Irish political drama The Dawning (1989). Further burnishing her thespian resumé, Pidgeon appeared in the BBC TV film She's Been Away (1990) with Dame Peggy Ashcroft and co-starred as Sonya in a TV version of Anton Chekov's Uncle Vanya (1991). Pidgeon's career came to a key turning point, however, after she starred in the London premiere of David Mamet's play Speed-the-Plow. Marrying Mamet in 1991, Pidgeon moved to the United States and co-starred in her first major American film, Mamet's provocative cop drama Homicide (1991). Pidgeon subsequently acted in Mamet projects throughout the 1990s, including the telefilm based on Mamet's book The Water Engine (1992); the controversial off-Broadway sexual harassment play Oleanna; and the Broadway production of The Old Neighborhood. Though she was off the screen during the mid-'90s, Pidgeon still composed the music score for the film version of Oleanna (1994). By the late '90s, Pidgeon was an integral member of Mamet's film repertory company. After co-starring as the pertly efficient assistant/potential femme fatale in Mamet's hit art house mind game The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Pidgeon returned to period films as liberated Winslow daughter Catherine in Mamet's adaptation of Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy (1999). Softening her style somewhat, Pidgeon surprised critics with her charming, if no-nonsense, turn as Philip Seymour Hoffman's sweet, literary small town love interest in Mamet's Hollywood satire State and Main (2000). Early life

Pidgeon was born to English parents in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States,[2] while her father was a visiting professor at MIT. Her family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland in 1970. She thus holds dual United States/United Kingdom citizenship. Growing up in Edinburgh, she was a teenage friend of singer Shirley Manson.

Pidgeon attended drama college and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London alongside Clive Owen, Liza Tarbuck and Serena Harragin.[citation needed] After some promising work as an actress in the United Kingdom, she moved to the United States.

Career

From 1986 to 1990, Pidgeon was the lead singer of the British folk/pop band Ruby Blue. Pidgeon left Ruby Blue shortly after the band had signed a major record label and was beginning to gather both commercial and critical success. She appeared in her first feature film in 1988, The Dawning. She then decided to concentrate on her acting career, starring in David Mamet's plays and films, initially in the movie Homicide, then in the play Oleanna, a part written for her. Pidgeon composed the music for the film version which starred Debra Eisenstadt in her role.

Returning to music in 1994, she released the solo album The Raven, followed by New York Girls' Club. A further album, The Four Marys, a collection of traditional Celtic folk songs, followed in 1998. In October 2005, she released Tough on Crime, which featured Walter Becker on guitar and the late Billy Preston on keyboards. Her most recent album, Behind the Velvet Curtain: Songs from the Motion Picture Redbelt, includes a cover version of the Beach Boys song, "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" and a duet with Luciana Souza.

Pidgeon has had starring roles in several of Mamet's films, including The Spanish Prisoner (1997), The Winslow Boy (1999) and Heist (2001).

She appeared in the U.S. television series The Unit, playing Charlotte Ryan. She had a small role in the 2008 movie Redbelt written and directed by Mamet, and also performed the music in it.

She also had a role opposite Tom Selleck in the CBS TV movie "Jesse Stone: Sea Change" (2007) where she played the role of "Leeann Lewis", a murder-bank robbery suspect.

Personal life

Pidgeon had met American writer/director David Mamet while acting in his play Speed-the-Plow during its run at The National Theatre in London. Though he was married at the time to actress Lindsay Crouse, Mamet began a relationship with Pidgeon. In 1990, Mamet divorced Crouse and he married Pidgeon in 1991. She and Mamet have two children, Clara and Noah. Pidgeon, who was born to a non-practicing Christian family, has converted to Mamet's Jewish faith.[3][4][5]
