Review

Only once after his total retirement from music in the mid-'50s was Artie Shaw persuaded to lend his name to a recording session recreating his earlier music. This 1963 LP (reissued last on Pausa) gave the clarinetist an opportunity to hear arrangements from his 1938 orchestra in stereo with Walt Levinsky playing his original solos. An interesting historical curiosity, but listeners are well advised to buy Artie Shaw's vintage recordings rather than this well-intentioned but unimaginative recreation. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
