Review

The music on the third of five LPs in Swaggie's Red Nichols series alternates between "symphonic jazz" (which often has vocals by Scrappy Lambert and huge groups modeled a bit on Paul Whiteman) and more freewheeling performances by Nichols' oversized Five Pennies. No matter what the setting, the music on this album (all but one cut dates from a three-month period) is delightful and swinging in its own way. In addition to the cornetist/leader, other key players include trumpeters Leo McConville and Manny Klein in the colorful brass trios with Nichols, trombonist Miff Mole, Dudley Fosdick on mellophone, Fud Livingston and Jimmy Dorsey on reeds, pianist Arthur Schutt and drummer Vic Berton. "Panama," "There'll Come a Time," "Margie," "Original Dixieland One-Step" and "A Pretty Girl Is like a Melody" are especially memorable. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
