History

In July 1858 the Redditch Railway Act authorised a line between Barnt Green and Redditch, which was opened on 18 September 1859 by the Midland Railway, lying on their branch line from Barnt Green. The line then ran south through Evesham to a junction at Ashchurch. There were intermediate stations between Redditch and Evesham at Studley & Astwood Bank, Coughton, Alcester, Wixford, Broom Junction (for the Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway), Salford Priors, and Harvington. The line beyond Redditch was closed in 1964, and the station has been a terminus since then.

The station has been relocated three times, in 1868, 1974 and most recently in 1993, to allow for redevelopment in the town centre. This movement coincided with the electrification of the Cross-City Line. The station was first situated on the site of the current bus station/cinema complex, and the goods yard was situated on Pound Meadow, which has recently been redeveloped into housing.

Facilities

The station is staffed and has a booking office as well as a ticket machine. Step-free access is available for wheelchair users.

Services

Trains operate every 30 minutes from early morning to late night, northbound via Birmingham New Street to Four Oaks and Lichfield.

Services are operated by Class 323 electric multiple units.
