Biography

Reeve Oliver is a three-piece indie rock band from San Diego, CA, which blends the nervy energy of punk-pop with the lightly mopey affect of emo while embracing the big guitar attack of bands like Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies. Reeve Oliver was launched in 1999 by guitarist and singer Sean O'Donnell, who had played in several other bands while paying the rent as an entertainer at Sea World (he was the opening act for the dolphins). While Reeve Oliver began as O'Donnell's solo project, in 2002 he decided to take his songs out of the bedroom and into California's rock clubs, recruiting his friend and fellow Sea World employee Brad Davis to play drums. As O'Donnell and Davis searched for a bass player after several early recruits failed to work out, they found themselves sharing a rehearsal space with established San Diego band Fluf, and O'Donnell's songs caught the ear of Fluf frontman Otisserie Bartimus (usually just called "O"), who volunteered to play bass in the new band. Bartimus clicked with O'Donnell and Davis, and in 2003 the band self-released a six-song EP drawn from their demos called Reevolution. To the band's surprise, Reevolution won the award for Best Rock Album of 2003 at the San Diego Music Awards, even though it wasn't a full album and hadn't received proper distribution; the award drew some welcome attention to Reeve Oliver, leading to a spot on the 2004 Warped Tour and a road trip opening for their friends Yellowcard. Reeve Oliver's self-titled debut album was released in the fall of 2004 by the independent label The Militia Group, and after solid reviews and extensive touring the band was signed to Capitol Records in 2006; their first major-label set is expected to be released in the summer of 2007. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Band History

Reeve Oliver was formed by vocalist/guitarist Sean O'Donnell while he was a member of the Christian punk band Dogwood. While writing songs for Dogwood, O'Donnell found himself writing more pop-based rock songs as well that did not fit the band's style. When Dogwood's album Building a Better Me was completed ahead of schedule, O'Donnell and Noise Ratchet drummer Brandon Young used the remaining studio time to record Reeve Oliver's first 5-song demo. O'Donnell left Dogwood in 2001 and he and Young formed Reeve Oliver as a full-time band, initially with Dogwood bassist Jason Harper who soon left and was replaced by Otis Bartholameu of the band Fluf (known simply by his first initial, O).[2] Eventually Young's commitments to Noise Ratchet led to his replacement by Brad Davis, a longtime friend of O'Donnell's. O'Donnell and Davis also work as entertainers and show hosts at SeaWorld.[2]

In 2003 Reeve Oliver was awarded "best rock album" at the San Diego Music Awards for The Reeveolution EP. This was followed by their debut self-titled album in 2005 which received the same award, and a 2006 award for "best rock act."[1] During this time the band performed as the opening act for Yellowcard on tour and also performed on the Warped Tour. In 2006 the band signed to major label Capitol, however they were soon dropped during the label's merger with Virgin. In March of 2007 they released The Endless Bummer EP through Apple Danish Records. That December they self-released their second album Touchtone Inferno!!!, recorded under their contract with Capitol. The album was released by Apple Danish/Summertone through iTunes and is currently being finalized for a CD release.

In February 2009 O'Donnell announced his involvement in a new musical project called Big If with Ryan Key of Yellowcard. This effectively put Reeve Oliver on hiatus, with Key stating that "Neither Yellowcard or Reeve Oliver feel like it is necessary to announce official break ups. There may come a time down the road where we want to get together and play shows with those bands. Who knows when that may be, but we aren't ruling it out completely."[3]
