Biography

Latin pop trio Reik formed in Mexicali, Baja California, in 2003. After recording a demo that yielded the Mexican underground club favorites "Levemente" and "Ahora sin Ti," singer Jesús Alberto Navarro Rosas and guitarist Julio Ramírez Eguía invited backing vocalist/guitarist Gilberto "Bibi" Marin Espinoza to join the lineup in early 2004. After signing to Sony Music a few months later, Reik teamed with producers Abelardo Vázquez and Kiko Cibrian to begin work on their self-titled debut LP. The album proved a phenomenon, generating three consecutive Mexican chart-toppers in "Yo Quisiera," "Que Vida la Mia," and "Noviembre sin Ti." All three singles also crossed over to the U.S. Latin pop charts, and in mid-2005 Reik mounted a brief U.S. tour; the trio also received a Latin Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Reik is a Latin Grammy-nominated Mexican band from Mexicali, Baja California formed by Jesús Alberto Navarro Rosas (lead vocals), Julio Ramírez Eguía (guitar/background vocals), and Gilberto Marín Espinoza (guitar). The group's name actually means "rake" (as in raking the guitar's strings", but the band wanted their Mexican listeners to pronounce it correctly, hence, Reik.

In 2003, Jesús Navarro and Julio Ramirez started their then-nascent musical project, tentatively called "Reik". It was then they recorded their first demos, which were released through the Mexican underground club scene. Two of the most successful demos — "Levemente" and "Ahora Sin Ti" — brought more widespread coverage across Mexico. In early 2004, Reik invited Gilberto to join the band. They have been famous ever since, mainly in Latin America, Mexico, and southern parts of the United States. Their videos have been broadcast on famous music television channels, such as MTV and HTV. Their second album, Secuencia, was released on November 14, 2006, which featured the first single, "Invierno" (released on November 6), which gained a lot of popularity based Latin American airplay. In September 2008 Reik released their third studio album Un Día Más.

Record Deal

By mid-2004 Reik started to get the attention of various major record companies, including Sony Music which eventually signed the band. In February 2005 Reik released their self-titled debut album, produced by Kiko Cibrian. The first single "Yo Quisiera" got heavy rotation on Mexican pop radio stations and soon went to number one. Their second single "Que Vida La Mia|Qué Vida La Mía" also topped the Mexican charts as did their third single "Noviembre Sin Ti". Their fourth single, "Niña", failed to match the success of their previous singles, charting only at #33.

Commercial Success

Reik's debut album went gold in Mexico on May 6th, 2005 after selling 50,000 copies. In June 2005, Reik traveled to the U.S. to promote their album and its first single. They had a promotional mini-tour that visited Miami, McAllen, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and New York. The album was formally released in the United States on May of that same year. To date, the album has sold 40,000 copies in the U.S. alone. By May, the album was certified platinum in Mexico for selling 120,000 copies. They have sold over half a million copies all over America to date. On July 6, 2007, Reik participated in the Alltel Wireless “Mi Círculo, Mi Música” (My Circle, My Music) concert in El Paso, TX.

Tours

Reik began their tour with pop group Camila on August 2007. They went to cities like Fresno, Los Angeles, San Francisco. In 2009 Reik began their tour in San Jose, CA, which is sponsered by Billboard.

The band also has 4 nominations to the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America in the categories of "Best Pop Artist", "Best Group", "Best Northern Region Artist", and "Best Northern Region New Artist", winning three out of four.
