Review

From the album title, Remember the Movies, to the name of the record label, Great Movie Themes, and on to the packaging, which includes a complete filmography in the CD booklet, the implication is that this European Marlene Dietrich compilation contains actual soundtrack recordings of songs from her films; it does not. Like so many unlicensed albums of Dietrich tracks that are in the public domain in Europe, this one consists of studio recordings, including most of her earliest discs, such as her first venture into the recording studio in June 1928 as a member of the chorus for what was originally called "Potpourri aus der Revue 'Es Liegt in der Luft," parts one and two, and is here simply called "Es Liegt in Der Luft," with the two parts combined into one. Most of the tracks, recorded at various sessions in Berlin, Paris, and Los Angeles, are from the '30s, although the compilers lead off the set with a track that, in 2000, was new to out-of-copyright status, "Black Market," from 1949. Several of Dietrich's signature songs are included, among them English and German versions of "Falling in Love Again" and "Ich Bin Die Fesche Lola" from The Blue Angel and "The Boys in the Backroom" from Destry Rides Again. But among the overlapping unlicensed releases that are the product of Europe's 50-year copyright limit on recordings, this is just another Dietrich title, no better or worse than many other similar discs. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
