Burri, René (b. 1933), Swiss photographer and film-maker, who studied at the Zurich Design School under Hans Finsler. He went freelance in 1955, travelled widely, became a full member of Magnum in 1959, and contributed to Life, Du, and other leading magazines. He is best known for ‘soft’ reportage of political conflicts and social issues worldwide, and for landscapes and portraits, including disarmingly appealing images of Che Guevara taken in Havana in 1963. In the 1970s he began working in colour, and experimented with collages. In 1984 the Zurich Kunsthaus produced a large Burri retrospective and book, One World.
